Do the Cards Across

You know, in my walk-around set I used to absolutely abuse Las Vegas Leapers.  I mean, when I was in college, a friend and I developed an absolute beast of a routine based on the version of Las Vegas Leapers from Michael Ammar’s Easy to Master Card Miracles.  It is still by far one of the most talked about routines I ever perform.  “Do the one where they sit on them,” is a constant request.

However, when I started working on stage, I never thought of the cards across as a viable routine to include in my set.  My close-up version wouldn’t translate well on stage and I never liked the versions I had seen other performers do where they just palm off the cards and put it on the other packet.  “It’s too transparent,” I thought.  “They’ll see right through it!”

Well, one day after re-watching Bill Malone’s excellent DVD set On the Loose, I listened very carefully to one segment where he listed the three most powerful stand-up card effects you can do for an audience.  And one of them was the cards across.  Well if Bill thinks it’s a powerful routine then it must be.

After some research and playing around with a few handlings, I finally settled on a routine I was willing to test.  It has not left my act since.  Without fail, every night when I perform this, I constantly get gasps of astonishment.  “Oh my god, how did he get those cards in her pocket?”

I learned that the biggest key to this entire routine is to have strong misdirection when you palm the cards and again when you add them to the other pile.  The easiest way to do this is to have your audience applaud for your volunteers.  I’ll leave the rest to you to figure out.

Whether you’re doing close-up or your doing stand-up…do the cards across! You won’t regret it!

I Love Mind Reading & Mentalism

I dunno what it is lately but I have been deep into the mentalism thing.  You can do millions of magic tricks for an audience and they’ll just politely clap, but as soon as you bust out some mind reading stuff, BOOOOM, you have broken down the polite applause and ventured out into the wild world of astonished gasps.

In my show I mix the magic with mentalism.  Yes I know, I am offending some unwritten rule that many purists would crucify me for, but as long as I’m getting paid, they can kiss my ass.

I work 6 nights a week in a comedy club, so I would never be able to come out and perform straight mentalism.  I begin with some comedy magic and slowly lead them down the garden path thinking this is just going to be a mindless experience until I switch over to mentalism.  They love it.  It’s almost a one two punch.  The first surprise comes when they realize that the routine they just witnessed was amazing, but now they are surprised on an even deeper level that the show is switching directions and this won’t be an average magic show.

Recently I have been looked down upon by other magi because I am pursuing this branch of our art, but I think it’s absolutely amazing and have had nothing but great experiences with it.  To anybody else standing at the edge of the abyss, take the leap!

13 Steps to Mentalism

The 13 Steps to Mentalism has been in my library since before I even got started incorporating mentalism into my act.  In fact, at the time I received it, I was still in my card tricks phase.  However, throughout the years, this magnificent tomb of material that Corinda blessed us  with has continuously provided me with some of the greatest inspirations and sparked ideas that I would have otherwise not have had.

Recently, Richard Osterlind has released a 6 DVD set that has every mentalist in the English speaking world salivating at the mouth to get their hands on a copy of it.  With the announcement of this DVD series, I went back to my shelf and dusted off my copy of this incredible volume and was again struck by the magnitude of usable material contained within its pages.  In fact, it provided me with the solution to a routine I had been working on.

As Osterlind has proven, each mentalist and magician has their own take on the material in Corinda’s masterpiece.  Can you imagine if there were a forum or message board geared strictly toward the material within the 13 Steps to Mentalism?  How many full blown acts could be developed by such an in depth study?  How many careers would be made?  How many acts would be improved just from the study of this text?  Such an endeavor would most certainly be worth its weight in gold.  As Richard Osterlind has done, I would love to see other full time professional mentalists takes on the material within the 13 Steps.

As for me, I can’t wait for Christmas to arrive so that I can get my hands on a copy of Richards sure to be amazing DVD set.

Proximity to the Audience & Seating

I did a corporate show tonight for about 300 people.  There was an entire dance floor between the stage and the audience.  The show went well, but it could have gone better.  I’m not quite sure why the distance between the audience and the stage is so crucial but it definitely is.  It seems that the closer I am to the audience, the better the show is.

Here is my theory:

I think after a certain amount of space there is a disconnect between the entertainer and the audience.  The audience no longer feels like part of the show.  Unlike  a more intimate situation, the audience now feels free to break out into conversation at their tables.  In hindsight, I also think that when the audience is seated at tables as opposed to theater style seating, you have to make sure that they are all situated to face you before you begin.  Having backs to you with a large distance between yourself and the audience is a show killer and should be avoided as much as possible.

Here is my solution:

First and foremost, try and get everybody situated so that they are turned in your direction.  However, the key secret that I discovered tonight is…TURN YOUR MIKE UP.  One minute I was struggling to get everybody’s attention, the next I was blessed with a sound manager from the heavens who turned up my mike and allowed me to take full control.  I know this may seem like common sense but the further away you get from the audience, the harder it is for them to hear you…so turn it up and make it hard for them to ignore you.  Worked great for me and the show went off without a hitch.

Stop Being Selfish – Criss Angel’s New Show Bombs

Haven’t seen this show personally but according to several reviews, it stinks:

To be honest, this is kind of shocking.  You would think that somebody spending this much time and money on a magic show would actually create a show that people want to watch.  Alas, there is a lesson to be learned in everything.  The lesson here is that this is what happens when you concentrate too much on what you want and not what your audience wants.  Most of us get into this profession for purely selfish reasons (i.e. Wanting to look cool in front of friends).  However, to actually be successful in the entertainment business, you have to concentrate on pleasing your audience.  It would seem that in this sense, Criss Angel has taken a big step backwards and has gone from successful entertainer to overpaid hobbyist.

Real Mind Reading – What If?

Here’s a fascinating concept.  What if you could really read minds?  What if all of a sudden, you woke up this morning and you now had direct access to the thoughts of every person you came in contact with?  How would that change you?  What if you were able to effortlessly sift through the minds of anybody and everybody?  Imagine a world where you would be able to tell the true nature of every person you came in contact with.  Can you envision being able to look past the public façade that most people put up.

Just think for a second about all of your private thoughts and memories that you never want anybody to know about.  Would some of them scare people?  Would the discovery of these thoughts and memories change how people see you?  Everybody has thoughts and memories such as these.  If you were to have access to all of these memories and thoughts from the people surrounding you – if you were to know every deep and dark thought that a person has, you would more than likely go mad.  If you weren’t driven insane by a deeper understanding of the duplicitous nature of humans, then you would at least probably become heavily dependent upon alcohol or drugs to cope with it all.

If you did somehow manage to overcome the anxiety and fear that such a condition might create, how would you live your life?  Would you openly admit that you have this ability?  Would people begin to fear and loathe you if they realized that you had unlimited access to their minds?  Would you try to take advantage of this ability?

Perhaps you would try to hide in plain sight as a stage performer or a psychic reader?  You might even try to make what you do look a bit more contrived, or a bit more like a “trick” in fear that you might quickly be discovered for what you really were.

Now we can take this in a completely different direction.  What if you were able to read minds from birth?  How would that have changed your life?  You’re upbringing would have undoubtedly been different.  What would your parents have thought when they discovered your ability?  Where would you have gone to school?  Would you have been sent to a mental institution at a young age?  What would have been the result of doctors and psychiatrists discovering your ability?  Would they have told others?  Or would they have been too afraid of you telling people their secrets?  Would they have tried to eliminate you?  What type of life would you be leading today?  What stories would you have to tell now that you have grown.

A fascinating concept!

You Don’t Know What You’re Missing – The Richard Osterlind Watch Routine

I just got back from spending a few days in a boat anchored off in a remote harbor in the Bahamas.  As my wife and I were meandering from boat to boat mingling with other sea-faring vacationers, the topic of my occupation came up.  I was wearing nothing other than my swim trunks and had no access to my deck of cards, when someone asked for me to perform something.  Swiftly thinking, I asked if anybody happened to have a business card and a pen.  Without missing a beat, I launched directly into the Osterlind Watch Routine from Mind Mysteries volume 1.  It killed.  In fact, it always kills.  I perform it six nights a week in my comedy club act.

When I originally saw this marvelous piece of mentalism performed, I didn’t think twice about it.  In fact, I had pretty much worked out the methodology before going on to the explanations.  However, a few days after watching the set, I decided to give this a try.  I haven’t looked back since.  If you do not have volume one of the Mind Mytery series, run don’t walk to the store and get it now.  If you do have the DVD but haven’t used this routine, then I implore you to stop sitting on this gem and give it a whirl…you don’t know what you’re missing.

A Very Strange Concept For Mentalists

This is the very reason I created this blog.  Who knows how many ideas and concepts I’ve come up with in the past that are forever lost on hard-drives of computers past.  Here is a very odd concept that I wrote about 3 years ago and just stumbled across today as I was cleaning up my computer.  It was inspired by several different sources but the two main sources are Bob Cassidy (Riding the Web from Artful Mentalism) and Docc Hilford (Mountains of Madness):

What if I were to tell you that your thoughts are not private?  Would that shock you?  Disturb you?  Make you lie awake at night?  Nature abhors a vacuum.  Every thought you make, every dream you have, every image you imagine, is not ensnared in your mind but is part of a vast unseen network of thoughts that all intertwine with one another.  If one was so trained, they could tap into this network.  However, without extreme mental abilities, it would take eons for a person to single out just one thought and from whence it came.

Ah, yes, from whence it came.  The existence of the thoughts in this network are not limited by the here and now.  Once a conscious thought is made, it will forever exist, endlessly riding throughout this vast network for all eternity.

Even more disquieting is the fact that not all of the thoughts come from this world.  Alternate worlds (or dimensions if you wish) exist in parallel with our own.  While the worlds exist separately from one another, this vast network of thought does not.  Imprints of all thoughts from the beginning of time from each one of these worlds exist upon the network.  It may surprise one to find out that quite a bit (if not all) of what we perceive as fictional literature is indeed not fictional at all.  It is merely the works of a sensitive individual who has been subconsciously influenced by the network.  It is perhaps nature’s way of allowing individuals who have been through tremendous circumstances to leave an impression of their lives after they pass; even if it is not in the world that they knew.

This opens up a tremendous new avenue of thought.  Imagine your favorite fictional worlds and characters actually existing…

Admittedly, this is an unpolished and unfinished concept, but damn is it cool!

The Dream Job

I just heard of this over at the Ellusionist blog!

Apparently Steve Cohen (The Millionaire’s Magician), is now offering a midnight show once a month.  This show only seats 20 people but each ticket is priced at $250.  The kicker is that it’s constantly SOLD OUT!  Yep, you heard me, $5000 for one show for 20 people and it is sold out on a consistent basis.

I first heard of Steve a couple years ago when somebody mentioned his Chamber Magic show.  This is exactly the type of show that I would love to be able to perform.  Small, intimate gatherings of people.  No large scale illusions, just pure conjuring and mentalism.

Another show similar to this is the Warren and Annabelle’s show in Maui.  Again, a small intimate gathering for a show that can’t be done for larger crowds.

I’d love to do something like this.  The real secret however, is putting warm bodies in the seats.
